- held your learner licence for at least a minimum continuous period of 12 months
- logged at least 80 hours in your learner logbook, including 15 hours at night, and ensured your supervisory driver has verified your logged hours and signed the statutory declaration contained in the middle of the logbook

Non-novice learner or overseas conversion (car) $44.20

However, non-government assessors may also charge additional fees for:
Hire of an assessment vehicle
A car familiarisation session
Assessing in your vehicle (or a driving school’s vehicle)
Other fees for services (such as fees for rural travel, administration or booking fees)
Be sure to confirm what fees you will be charged for a P1 assessment before booking with a non-government assessor.
You have to obey the following conditions on your P1 licence:
- always carry your licence on you
- display red on white P plates and ensure your P plates can be seen from the front and back of your car
- drive no faster than 100km/h even when a higher speed limit applies
- have a blood alcohol content of 0.00
- not use a mobile phone
- obey all Tasmanian Road Rules
- obey peer passenger restrictions.
You can tow a trailer on your P1 licence. You must ensure your P plates are still visible, attaching one to the rear of the trailer if the trailer would block the rear plate from view.
If you hold your P1 licence for 12 continuous months and drive safely (and not receive any P1 restart offences, disqualifications or suspensions), you’ll progress to your P2 licence.
You do not need a separate licence card and your licence will renew automatically as long as it is current.
As a P2 driver, you can drive at the posted speed limit and use your phone in hands-free or speaker mode. However, you must:
- display green on white P plates and ensure your P plates can be seen from the front and back of your car
- have a blood alcohol content of 0.00
- carry your licence on you
- obey the Tasmanian road rules.
